The\u00a0signal is then converted into ultrasonic energy and transmitted\u00a0across the sensing gap towards the receiver crystal.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">When there is air in the gap, the high frequency ultrasonic\u00a0energy will be attenuated, thereby not allowing the energy\u00a0to be received. When there is liquid in the gap, the ultrasonic\u00a0energy will propagate across the gap and the current\u00a0shift or relay output will indicate a reception of the However, there are limitations to the types of process they will work in. The factors below\u00a0must be taken into consideration before selecting an ultrasonic level switch for your application.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: square;\">\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Liquids only<\/strong> \u2013 the process media must be a liquid. The ultrasonic level switch cannot detect the\u00a0difference between two gases or a gas and a solid. The even density of a liquid is required for\u00a0proper detection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: square;\">\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Clean liquids only<\/strong> \u2013 a liquid that has too high a percentage of solids will not transmit sound well\u00a0enough to allow detection. Typically 5% suspended solids are the maximum amount allowed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: square;\">\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The liquid must flow<\/strong> \u2013 an application where the liquid cannot drain out of the sensor gap will\u00a0cause false alarms. If a liquid is too viscous to flow out of a 3\/4\u201d gap then the unit will not\u00a0operate properly. Sometimes this can be solved by different mounting, but some liquids are\u00a0just too viscous.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: square;\">\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>No (or few) bubbles<\/strong> \u2013 especially in fluids with a viscosity higher than 100cP (30W motor oil).\u00a0Large bubbles in thick fluids will block the sound signal from crossing the gap.
