justify;\">When a liquid is flowing through a piping system, and it encounters a restriction, such as a reduced port valve, it accelerates to a higher velocity to retain a relatively constant volumetric flow rate.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">If the local pressure within the restricted flow area drops below the vapor pressure of the liquid fluid, which is a condition called the \u201cvena contracta,\u201d vaporization of fluid occurs (i.e., vapor bubbles would form in the liquid). If the downstream pressure remains below the vapor pressure of fluid, the process condition is said to be flashing, and the outlet stream will be predominantly in a vapor phase. When this flow impinges on valve components, it can cause erosive damage.
